English Version

Hey everyone! How was 2024 for you? Today I'd like to reflect on everything I've done in 2024.

Before we begin, I have a quick announcement.

My JavaScript course is currently on sale. Sale runs for 2 weeks. Use coupon code 2024FINAL to save 1000 TWD.

2024 was a year where I made a lot of attempts and learned to know myself more.

In the beginning of the year, I took some sponsored deals as I am of the mind set of "don't knock it until you try it".

To my surprise, the sponsored project took a few times longer than I had expected, during which I could not work towards my other goals at all, completely losing my freedom. This experience taught me the importance to have control over your time and that I need to think very carefully and evaluate if the compensation is worth it when I sell my time. Oftentimes it is not.

So when I was done with the sponsored deals around February, I made the decision to focus on the most important goals and not let anything else get in the way.

Focus mode

From Feb to May, I had only 1 focus: complete my JavaScript course. I know high quality production requires high quality focus, so I completely stopped posting videos on my youtube channel. During this time, I would do the same thing every single day. I would write, compile the course content, write code, shoot, edit. After all that, I put up the course website and the sales page, all by my own. Being able to finish all these tasks by myself has to be attributed to the information searching skills and knowing "how to learn" that I gained from learning to program.

This is an important milestone for me because completing this course could be seen as building infrastructure for my business. Once this is complete, everything afterwards will go smoother and smoother.

Slowing down, learning

Completing one of the major goals, it was already June. I slowed down my pace and began to read books that I had always wanted to read but never gotten around to. These go from business, to learning, to many other fields. I started my second channel also around the same time, adding a new channel as well as variation to my content.

Watch this video to see what happened.

When July came, one thing I had always wanted to try was to deepen my understanding to the basics of computer science. This seemed to be a pretty good timing to do it. So I committed fully to it. I started with linear algebra as It was what I felt I was lacking the most.

From the large amount of self-study experience I had in the past, I had a picture in my head of how to proceed with my learning journey. At the same time, I was fully aware this was not going to be an easy task. It would require deep focus and large amounts of time. So again, I decided to stop uploading to my main channel and only stay on my upload schedule for my second channel to focus on my study. (It was also around this time that I started learning Korean.)

This was not unlike going through a long tunnel. You don't know when the tunnel will end, but the only thing you can do is keep going.

Time went by really fast. I was already November before I noticed. I got to a pretty good place to wrap up and turn my attention to outputting the knowledge I had gained. It was also becoming more and more of a dangerous bet if I kept holding off uploading videos.

To output the knowledge I learned, there were 2 major challenges:

  1. the topic itself isn't the easiest for me
  2. converting concepts into animation is another skill of it's own that requires creativity and imagination

Knowing the chaos awaiting me if I tried to brute force through it, I decided to break it down into simpler steps.

I first extract the essential parts from the text that I want to include in my own content. This is not the same as a videos script. I am just writing the content in text without much consideration for visualization. This allowed me to focus entirely on the content without worrying about how to visually present it. So I was able to focus entirely on compiling the content, on what to include, what to exclude, and on how to explain in plain words to the uninitiated.

Once I got all of those things out of the way, the only thing that's left was convert these concepts into animations. With the base(the text version) already built, I didn't need to think anything about the "content" and could focus entirely on building the animations. It was certainly not an easy task, but was already much less complicated than if I had done everything at once.

At last, I published the video on 12/25. I knew already that the wouldn't be a view attracting series especially during the initial periods. However, it holds significant meaning in my mind. As long as it can provide value for students beginning to learn the subject, I believe its value will be seen in the long term. It may seem like a risky bet to most, but to me, it is a bet that can only be a win for me. The process of making this video itself, is a valuable lesson already. Teaching is the best way to learn, after all. Taking that into account, even without any outward rewards, there is still a guaranteed reward I stand to gain.

summary

Speaking of learning. Let me go over one by one what I have learned/gained over 2024!

  • Started membership program. Optimized it towards a model that best fits me
  • Created and marketed first online course
  • Opened up new channels such as blog, second channel, and instagram and created content on each
  • Improved my math basics which will serve as base for further learning
  • Can understand quite a bit of Korean now
