About This Series
This is the 0th episode of my new series: solo report. Each episode of this seris will consist of 2 segments:
- Retrospective of last week
- Next week's plan
In each episode, I will look back on what I've done and what I couldn't finish last week, and make a plan for what to do next week. Before I delve into the details of how this series will be done, I want to first explain why I decided to start this series.
Why Start This Series
For a company of one or any solo worker not working under a company, the biggest challenge that will constantly haunts you, is procratination and perfectionism. To counter this, it's key to make plans and acutally realize them by taking actions.
What I've come to realize since I started to make content full-time, is that one project often take months to complete. A project could be a single video that requires tens of hours of work, a learning one where you dedicate all of your time really diving into something, or a new business idea that requires you to take time away from content creation to execute.
In any case, to focus on a project means months of time investment in something that doesn't guarantee high return. It is crucial to make sure you stay "on track".
But what does "on track" mean? No one tells you you what is the "right track" and what is the "wrong track". This is why testing you ideas on reality is crucial when you are the boss of yourself. No one is taking respinsibility for you. YOU get to make every decision. YOU are the one who is responsible for the consequences of your decisions.
It is a common pitfall for businesses to invest too many resources in an idea that only later proves to be a failure. One erronous decision could mean the bankruptcy of a company, whether large or one of one.
In the recent months, I have been commiting all of my time to learning math. From a long term perspective, this is an investment with no downsides. I increases my options when it comes to work I can do, video topics I can choose, and boosts my ability to think logically as well as perform analysis. Not to mention the very experience is also valueable.
However, the unrealistic picture I envisioned in my head when I made the dicision to start this math studying project, was "I'm gonna get so good at math and read so many scientific papers and make videos I couldn't dream to make now".
Soon after I was done with studying math textbooks, I realized my "fantsay" wasn't going to come true any time soon. As soon as I got around to reading scientific papers, I started to realize how large the field is, and that learning is a never ending journey that I must put a stop to for now, so as to not going deeper down the rabbit hole. I felt inadequate. There are many who know more than me about math, about machine learning, about computer science. But it's time to change things up. I know for a fact that the knowledge I gained in path 4 months has value. I know can make something valueable, something unique with the skillset I possess.
So I made the call. I devided to stop learning and start outputting. This might seem obvious but it is not. Otherwise so many companies wouldn't fail.
Anyway, having gone thorugh this experience, I realized how important it is to look back on things and evaluate the state I am in and adjust and optimize your trajectory, leading me to the idea to start this series.
This series will be a good opportunity for me to look at things from a wider perspective, allowing me to make fine adjustments to my trajectory to stay on track. Hopefully, it will also provide motivation and inspiration for aspiring solo-ers.
The Format(續)
With the background story out of the way, I would now like to address how this series will be conducted.
This series will not be an actual weekly show depite its name "自營週報". If solo report becomes a burden that gets in the way of my other more important focuses, that defeats the whole point: to keep me on the "right" track.
Some of the episodes will be patreon exclusive, as I may not want to make public some of the things I talk about. Whether or not a video will be made public will also depends on how well I judge it will perform.
I spent the majority of this post talking about the backstory of this series. It's time to get to the important bits.
Last Week
Last week, most of my efforts were put into making future videos for my second channel. I made about 1 month's worth of video, which will allow me to focus entirely on my other project without disturbing my weekly update schedule for my second channel.
Next Week's Plan
For the next week, I will first compile chapter 1 of linear algebra into a blog post. This will help me to create the structure of how to present the informtion in the chapter. This blog post will serve as the base for my video on the first chapter. To create the video, I will also be necesarry to learn how to make the animations to visualize the ideas. So in short, I will:first write the blog post. Once that's done I will get to making the video and learn whatever's needed along the way.
Conclusions
To conclude, I hope this series will help me better allocate time and avoid the pitfall of over-learning and udner-outputting. At the same time, I also hope this series can provide some insights and inspiration for my viewers.
If you like the concept of this series, don't hesitate to subscribe. Consider joining my patreon to support me. I also make monthy Q&A videos answering questions from my members.
Let's keep hustling on the path of self-improvement. I look foward to seeing you in the next episode!
